American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) members work hard to care for our most vulnerable patients. The Department of Veterans Affairs threatened to close several VA hospitals to “help address recruitment challenges”. AFGE locals across Missouri called on us to help stop these cuts and demand the federal government to take action to prevent unelected people from harming the health of patients and the membership of the union.
We showed up outside the VA headquarters in Kansas City to support workers from AFGE District 9. They secured the support of US Representative Emanuel Cleaver II by sharing their stories during the rally and virtual town hall. After a long fight, AFGE workers saw the United States Senate act to keep all the VA hospitals fully open.
