Missouri’s Medicaid Crisis Hits Home for Disabled Missourians

As someone who has relied on Missouri’s Medicaid system for over 25 years due to disability, I’ve seen firsthand how effective our state programs can be when properly funded and supported by our leaders. After years of certain politicians siphoning away resources and adding more and more hoops to jump through, our Medicaid system is failing Missourians.

Missouri is in a process of Medicaid “unwinding” – an administrative review that has led to 356,000 Missourians being kicked off Medicaid so far. Most individuals who have lost their healthcare haven’t done so due to ineligibility. Instead, procedural issues—such as paperwork errors, application delays, or incorrect information held by the state—are often to blame. The process of renewing your eligibility or enrolling for the first time is so burdensome at this moment, that the federal government is stepping in. By law, Medicaid applications must be processed within 45 days – most states process applications within 24 hours. Missouri stands alone as the worst state in the nation for application processing delays with a staggering 72% of applications taking longer than the mandated 45 days to process. This isn’t just bureaucracy; it’s a life-and-death issue for many Missourians, including myself.

I’ve navigated Missouri’s Medicaid system through its ups and downs. I remember a time when I could rely on dedicated caseworkers who knew my needs personally. They were advocates, navigating the system alongside me, ensuring I received the care and support I desperately needed. Over the years, however, I’ve witnessed a disinvestment in public services and the erosion of our healthcare safety net. These dedicated caseworkers have been given impossible caseloads due to privatization. It’s a painful transformation—one that has left many Missourians stranded and alone.

The challenges we face today are not just about paperwork and processing times; they are about access to essential medical care. Prolonged delays in Medicaid processing force vulnerable individuals to delay medical treatments, skip prescriptions, and endure unnecessary suffering. I’ve sat in crowded waiting rooms for hours, surrounded by fellow Missourians—elderly, children, and those with disabilities—all waiting for our names to be called. You can feel both a sense of community and shared frustration. We all know what a literal lifeline Medicaid and other public services are for our families – and we all know how many barriers are put in our way to stay covered.

Missouri’s current struggles with Medicaid are made worse by understaffing, outdated technology, and inadequate resources. These are the result of policy choices and refusals to invest in Missouri Medicaid – but they are not insurmountable problems. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw funding boosts that briefly alleviated these issues and helped Missourians in our time of need, only to see these policies axed.

It’s heartbreaking to watch the deterioration of a system that once worked effectively for so many – and knowing it does not have to be this way. I’ve witnessed firsthand how policies can change lives when there is genuine effort and intent. Missouri has the resources and the capacity to fix these problems. What we need now is leadership that prioritizes healthcare access and commits to sustainable solutions.

This isn’t just about meeting federal mandates; it’s about fulfilling our moral obligation to care for the most vulnerable among us.

As a state, we must commit to fully funding and staffing our Medicaid programs, investing in modern technology, and supporting our frontline workers who are essential to making the system work. It’s time to restore dignity and reliability to Missouri’s Medicaid system, ensuring that every eligible individual receives timely and compassionate care.
