After weeks of deadlock, the Missouri legislature is back to business as usual. Unfortunately, for some politicians, it’s the business of attacking workers, healthcare, and democracy.

As we enter this final stretch, we must keep the pressure up.

Protecting Unemployment Benefits

At a time when all of us are doing our best, some politicians are taking this as an opportunity to slash Missouri’s unemployment benefits even more. This week, the Missouri House passed HB 1860 – a bill to cut Missouri’s unemployment from 20 weeks to only 8 weeks. This bill hands down would make Missouri one of the worst states to be unemployed. Our fight to protect and strengthen our unemployment system now moves to the Missouri Senate.

Defending Direct Democracy & the Initiative Petition

HJR 79, one of the dozens of anti-democratic bills this session, was heard in the Senate Local Government and Elections Committee this week. TWENTY witnesses testified against this bill. HJR 79 and bills like it only have one goal – to make it harder for voters to propose and pass ballot initiatives that reflect our values. Missouri’s initiative petition process has served our state for 115 years and allows us to build a democracy that reflects the will of Missouri voters. The legislature should follow the will of the people, instead of attempting to grab power by limiting our ability to make decisions for ourselves.

Attempts to Repeal Medicaid Expansion

Even though more than 53% of Missouri voters demanded increased access to Medicaid for Missourians, certain politicians have tried everything they can to deny health care to 274,312 Missourians. This week, HJR 117, the constitutional amendment that would repeal Medicaid Expansion, passed out of the Senate Appropriations Committee. This dangerous bill now moves to the full Senate.
